Bright green, gold, orange and red run across the face in large plates, with deep red patches and a dark shale base. You can see the separate layers along the edges.

Dendritic pattern. This piece also shows dendrites: fern-like, branching patterns made of mineral, usually manganese or iron oxide. They form when mineral-rich water seeps into tiny cracks in the stone long after it was buried. As that water meets oxygen, the minerals come out of it and build up in branching, tree-like shapes. Dendrites look like fossil plants, but they are purely mineral.

Multi-layered ammolite is already less common than single-layer material. Finding dendrites in the same piece is unusual, which makes this a distinctive collector's specimen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0745/1269/5509/files/e654abb4-7685-4519-90cd-84b2c00453bd.png?v=1792899172
